Ashley Gonzalez, formerly of Cuba, had been away from the international judo scene for three years but last month, he competed in the 2021 Zagreb Grand Prix, this time for Romania, and did well enough to make it to the semifinal.
A former World Champion and Olympic silver medalist, Gonzalez who has acquired Romanian citizenship, is setting his sights on Paris 2024.
Watch Gonzalez win the World title in 2013.
Gonzalez had previously competed in three Olympics (in 2008, 2012 where he got silver, and 2016). He is hoping the fourth time will be a charm and that he will be able to improve upon his silver medal from London.
Since he last competed at the world level, at the 2018 Baku World Championships, he has moved up a weight. He used to compete at -90kg but is now fighting at -100kg.
The current Olympic cycle is a shorter one, at three years instead of four due to the delay in the Tokyo Olympics. If Gonzalez is successful at winning a spot for Paris 2024, he would be 35 years of age at the time.
